Winona Marie Glenn Lightner Obituary (1925 - 2018)

Winona Marie (Glenn) Lightner, age 93, died peacefully at St. Mary's Home - Erie, on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, with her family at her side. She was born on April 30, 1925 in Heilwood, PA, a daughter of the late Daniel and Margaret (McAdoo) Glenn. Winona graduated from Clymer High School, in Clymer, PA in 1943, and attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She was employed by the Erie School District as a Learning Resource Aide at Burton Elementary School. Winona was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church for many years, and served as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and was active in Choir, Day Camp, and the Women's Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, in 2007, Lisle (Pete) Lightner, whom she married on March 30, 1946; four brothers, Lowell, Gerald, Ronald, and Dwight Glenn; and one sister, Martha Jean Phillips. Survivors include, four sons, Randy, Scott (Jane), Jerry (Patty), and Todd Lightner; one daughter, Cindy (Todd) Shields; 10 grandchildren, and 12 greatgrandchildren. Also surviving are, three sisters; Mary Kay Zieminski, of Rocklin, CA, Margaret Lezark, of Benecia, CA, and Cynthia Sparks, of Owings Mills, MD; one brother, Rogers Glenn, of Shenandoah Junction, WV; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Ditch, of Erie. Winona was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She volunteered for the PTA, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts. Even though she never played sports, Winona was a true supporter of her husband and children. Winona loved to travel with her husband in their motor home, traveling extensively across the U.S. and Canada. At one point, Winona kept track of all the places they had visited on a map, with push pins at each location. She also loved to read, knit, cook, and bake, and was often asked to bring her bread pudding to gatherings. Winona enjoyed growing plants, and had beautiful African violets. Her family would like to thank the entire staff of St. Mary's for the wonderful care they provided Winona, during her stay there. She especially enjoyed her times with Dexter, the therapy dog, who emotionally became a close friend and confidante of Winona. A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date, by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Home - Erie, 607 E. 26th St., Erie, PA 16504, or Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 2320 East Lake Rd., Erie, PA 16511.
