Joseph R. "Joey" Zastawa Obituary (1936 - 2017)

Joseph R. "Joey" Zastawa, age 80, of Erie, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, May 5, 2017. He was born in Erie on November 10, 1936, son of the late Walter and Mary Kusiolk Zastawa. Joseph attended Tech High and served as a Sergeant in the Marine Corp during the Korean War as an Aviation Electrician. Upon returning home from the service, Joseph met the love of his life, Kay Stromenger. They married on July 25, 1959 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Erie. Joseph was employed at Gustafson's Optical and Schroeck Optical as a dispensing optician. He was a lifetime member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and served as a dedicated member of the Men's Council. Joseph was also a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council 4071- Archbishop John Mark Gannon Assembly 0943. Joseph enjoyed gardening, his daily ice cream cone, and most of all, fishing with his grandchildren and attending their sports, concerts and activities. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his five sisters, Florence Tatara, Irene Fredrychowski, Helen and Rita Zastawa, and Theresa Fredrychowski; four brothers, Alexander, Stanley, Walter, and Casmir Zastawa. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Kay Stromenger Zastawa; two children, Mark Zastawa (Rose) and June Zastawa Vroman (Doug); three granddaughters, Stephanie Zastawa Simon (John), Jessica Zastawa, and Marissa Zastawa Wanner (Tony); three grandsons, Alec, Jordan, and Noah Vroman; two great-grandsons, Jack Simon and Jacob Wanner; one sister, Anna Winschel; several nieces and nephews, and longtime friend, John Raclawski. Family and friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc. 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Thursday from 4 to 7 pm and are invited to attend a Prayer Service there on Friday at 11:15 am followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church at 12 noon. Military Honors will follow, rendered by the Erie and Crawford Veterans Detail.
