Doros Michaelides M.D. Obituary (1936 - 2019)

Doros Michaelides M.D., 82, of Erie PA, passed away on January 6, 2019. He was born in Cyprus, on January 7, 1936, the son of the late Nikita and Elpinike Michaelides. Doros was a renaissance man, having started his secondary education as a Royal Greek Government scholar, and going on to receive his Doctorate in Medicine at the University of Athens, graduating magna cum laude in 1962. He continued his studies at the University of Liverpool and University of Newcastle-upon Tyme, receiving a Masters of Biochemistry. Doros's extensive career included his work as a Fellow of Internal and Clinical Medicine at the Royal Infirmary, University of Edinburgh, after which he served as a resident of Internal Medicine at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN. Doros continued his work at the Western Oklahoma Chest Disease Hospital as a Fellow. Doros ultimately settled with his wife in Erie in 1971, serving as Acting Chief and Chief, respectively, of the Respiratory Care Center at the VA Medical Center until 1984. Doros's career culminated in a thriving private practice in Erie, where he served and was loved by patients for twenty years. He was also a staff member in Internal Medicine at Hamot Medical Center during that time, and taught as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Hahnemann University School Medicine in Philadelphia, and at Gannon University in Erie. Doros was an excellent chess player, enjoyed reading about history, and had a penchant for researching and diagnosing ailments of ancient rulers based upon available historic evidence of their symptoms. Doros is survived by his wife of 53 years, Effie (nee Loizides); his daughter, Nike, husband Timothy, and their three children, Alex, Max and Sofia; and his daughter, Joanna Totolici and her husband, Adrian. He is also survived by a brother, Glafkos Michaelides; as well as several nieces and nephews. Doros was predeceased by his brother, Stelios Michaelides. Friends are invited to call at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 W. Lake Road, Erie, PA, on Saturday, January 12th. Viewing will be at 10:00 AM, followed by an 11:00 AM service conducted by Rev. Theofanis Nacopoulos. A 1:00 PM luncheon will follow.
