Delores Jean “Dee” Von Burg, died in Erie, PA on Wednesday February 25, 2026 at UPMC Hamot. She was born August 16, 1931 in Indianapolis to Graydon and Alene (Scudder) Maguire.
Dee graduated from Shortridge High School (not knowing that her future daughter-in-law’s grandpa was teaching in the chemistry department). She married Robert Allan Von Burg on October 7, 1950 and they shared 49 loving years together in Indiana (except for one year of dust and scorpions in base housing at Fort Hood during the Korean War). After Bob’s discharge they settled in Plainfield, IN. He started 25 years at Detroit Diesel-Allison and she went to work at Indiana Bell Telephone, until in 1961 when they welcomed their only child Geoff, then she became the most loving mother ever a boy could desire. After moving to the best Indianapolis school district (MSD, Wash. Twp.) she added social outreach to her role as Mom. You may remember her as an election official at the polls at Broadmoor golf club or working backstage at channel 20 PBS auction. There were the dozens and dozens of cookies baked for the boys’ and girls’ prisons and handmade cardboard and crepe paper Easter baskets for fundraising by an informal “sorority”, Iota Gamma Nu. Being a devoted dog lover who always had one or two in her life, Dee also volunteered at the Indianapolis Humane Society. When Bob retired, he opened his own quick printing shop and she worked with him to try to make his dream project succeed, but it was not to be. Afterwards she worked at Pogo’s Hallmark shop. In her 80’s, she finished her working years at CVS, often offering to take holidays so that younger staff could be home with their families. In 2020, Dee left her hometown and moved to Erie, Pennsylvania to be closer to Geoff and Jean. Her years in independent living at Brevillier Village were nice. Dee found a social and religious community there and at Faith Lutheran Church.
Dee was preceded in death by her husband, Bob (and his brothers, Donald and Paul); her brother, Marvin “Mac” Maguire (his first wife, Annette); nieces, Connie and Cindy; and a lifetime’s worth of beloved dogs. She is survived by her son, Geoff, his wife, the Rev. Jean Kuebler; Mac’s widow, Linda; four grand-nephews, and the Linebach family.
The family is grateful to the super kind and supportive nursing staff on 4 South at UPMC Hamot.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Faith Lutheran Church, 5414 East Lake Rd., on Sunday, March 8th from 2:30 pm until the time of the Memorial Service there at 3:30 p.m. All are welcome to join the family for a meal after the service. Interment of her ashes will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis later this spring. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the ANNA Shelter, 1555 East 10th Street, Erie, PA 16511, the Faith Lutheran Organ Fund, 5414 East Lake Road, Erie, PA 16511 or a charity of your choice.
